Liberal Youth Elections

Below is a message from Caron Lindsay, Returning Officer for Liberal Youth’s upcoming elections. Here is the full message, followed by job descriptions under the ‘read more’ tag. The deadline for nominations is midnight, Friday 19th of April. Please contact Caron at lyelections [at] for more information.

Nominations are now open for Liberal Youth’s annual elections.

This means that any Liberal Youth member may put themselves forward for any position on Liberal Youth’s Executive or other committees. I will also simultaneously be running the elections for Liberal Youth England (Liberal Scotland and Liberal Youth Wales/IR Cymru run their elections separately) – a full list of roles is below. 

If you wish to stand for any of these positions please email your nomination, to by midnight, Friday 19th April. Any nominations received after this time will not be accepted. Your nomination must include:

  • Candidate’s Name
  • Candidate’s Membership Number
  • Candidate’s Local Party
  • Position standing for
  • Candidate’s Email Address
  • Candidate’s Telephone Number
  • Candidate’s Postal Address
  • The names and membership numbers of two members of LY nominating the candidate
  • The written consent of the candidate to be nominated for election

I must also receive, by the close of nominations, from each candidate a manifesto no larger than one side of A5, either as a PDF or word format.  This may include any artwork you wish but if it contains any endorsements must be accompanied by written verification of the individual providing the endorsement.  Two people may stand jointly for a job share for any of these roles, for more details please see the LY constitution or contact me.

To opt OUT of electronic voting, and receive a postal ballot, please email no later than Friday 19th April.

Job Descriptions – in the Constitution but posted here for clarification.

Duties of the Executive
• Convene the Executive Committee
• Ensure the completion of the organisations administrative
• Ensuring the organisation is working towards fulfilling the
objectives outlined in Article 1.2
• Creating and chairing an Office Management Committee in the
case of the organisation having a staff member

Vice Chair
•Act as temporary Chair should the Chair become vacant
•Co-ordinate Internal Communications for Liberal Youth
•Represent the Federal Organisation to Branches and Members
•Act as Executive observer to the Regional Council

• Producing budgets, financial reports, annual accounts and
financial regulations
• Meeting PPERA requirements
• Monitoring Liberal Youth’s financial situation

Communications Officer
• Promoting the organisation and it’s objectives in the media
• Communicating with the membership
• Producing and developing communications channels
• Maintaining the Liberal Youth Website
• Other avenues of communication as required

Campaigns Officer
• Recruiting new members
• Promoting the policy of Liberal Youth and the Liberal Democrat
to students and young people
• Working alongside the Liberal Democrats to fulfil the objectives
outlined in Article 1.2
• Ensuring PPERA compliance during election campaigning
• Co-ordinating campaigns as decided by Conference
• Co-ordinating the annual Freshers campaign

Membership Development Officer
• Identifying and supporting the training needs of members to
achieve the objectives outlined in Article 1.2
• Recruiting new members
• Planning content for national Liberal Youth training events

Events Officer
• Organising Liberal Youth conferences, training and national
• Co-ordinating Liberal Youth’s presence at Federal Conferences

Policy Officer
• Developing policy related to Students and Young People
• Overseeing procedures relating to the maintenance of the
policy book, and conduct reviews of Policy on an Ad Hoc basis
as needed.
• Working alongside the Liberal Democrats to fulfil the objectives
outlined in Article 1.2
• Assist ordinary members who wish to submit policy to
conference in development of such
• Attend sessions of Federal Policy Committee
• Work with Policy Committee and the relevant training officer of
the Executive to create and deliver policy training when

International Officer
• Co-ordinating Liberal Youth’s international agenda
• Managing relations with our international affiliates
• Managing relations with other Liberal Democrat groups with an
international focus
• Act as the Liberal Youth Representative to the International
Relations Committee of the Liberal Democrats.
• Advice Policy committee on International Affairs and Foreign
policy as required.

State Representatives
• Representing their membership to the Executive
• Representing Liberal Youth activity to their membership

Non-portfolio officers
• Various Duties assigned to them by the Executive in support of
the portfolio officers

The Executive in its Entirety:
• Implementing decisions made at conference
• Promoting the organisations objectives outlines in Article 1.2
• Producing a full and accurate handover report for their
• Attending, where reasonably possible, Liberal Youth events
including but not limited to meetings of the Executive,
Conference and training events.”
